Knee Pain Below Knee Cap Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Pain below the knee is a common conditions associated with the patella or the knee cap, and is generally classified as Patellofemoral pain. According to experts, the main contributing factors to this condition include muscle imbalance, inadequate stretching, running and overuse of muscles. Typically, all Patellofemoral pain include those pains associated with climbing and descending a stair-case, and pain associated with prolonged sitting. This pain can be difficult to manage, therefore, should not be ignored.

Causes of knee pain below knee cap

Runner’s Knee: this pain results from changes and cartilage wear that lead to blistering of the cartilage surface, causing anterior knee pain that spreads to the knee cap.

Arthritis: probably one of the most common causes of knee pain below knee cap. It is a painful inflammation of the knee joint.

Knee cap dislocation: knee cap dislocation results from injuries to the knee, resulting to deformities and knee pain below knee cap.

Tendinitis: this results from inflammation, swelling and irritation of the knee tendon that is the structure that joins the bone and knee muscle.

Patella fracture: this is simply a broken knee cap. It results from serious knee injuries due to running, overuse of the muscles and straining the knee cap.

Symptoms of pain below knee cap

Knee pain below knee cap can easily be determined through the following notable signs and symptoms.

  • Pain around, below, on the sides and in front or even deep within the knee cap
  • Pain on the knee cap while walking, more so while kneeling, sitting and running
  • Difficulty in bending the knee or walking while using the affected knee
  • Swelling, inflammation, stiffness or bruising of the knee especially below the knee cap
  • Limited or painful movement

Treatment of knee pain below knee cap


Rest the knee with the painful cap for about three days, that means you cannot run or engage in your daily physical activities that may cause more pain.


Apply ice to the knee in order to reduce inflammation and provide relief to the tissues that have been damaged.

This treatment is for those who are suffering from chronic patellar tendon condition. Because in chronic condition inflammation treatment is not very useful, therapeutic exercises are required.


Elevate the injured leg to reduce the inflammation and swelling.


Compressing the injured knee cap with some brace, rag or even an elastic bandage can help in relieving pain and reducing the swelling.


To decrease pain and swelling, you can take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Some examples of the medications are Celebrex, Ibuprofen, and Naprosyn. But remember to consult your doctor before taking any of these medications.
