A native to eastern North America, Adder’s Tongue can be found growing in early spring while temperatures are still cool and before trees have their summer foliage. A perennial, approximately 1 foot in height having two long leathery green leaves mottled with purplish or brownish spots. One central stem produces one small lily like yellow flower tinged with red, whose petals curve back revealing 5 to 8 narrow yellow spikes in its center.

It is a fine cooling herb, which gives it rare adaptation as a curative of wounds. The root and the leaves are antiseptic, detergent, emetic, haemostatic, styptic and vulnerary. An ointment made from the plant is considered to be a good remedy for wounds and is also used in the treatment of skin ulcers. The expressed juice of the leaves is drunk as a treatment for internal bleeding and bruising.

The juice of the leaves drank with distilled water of Horse-tail is good for relieving hiccough, and for vomiting, or bleeding at the mouth or nose.
