What Is Sciatica?


Sciatica is a common pain condition marked by pain, numbness and/or tingling beginning in the buttock and oftentimes extending down the leg, all the way to the foot.  
 
Sciatica is the result of either inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a nerve which starts at the spinal cord in the low back, extends through the piriformis muscle in the buttock, and branches down the back of the leg, and into the foot. Causes of sciatica are disc herniations or other degenerative changes in the lower part of the spine, piriformis syndrome, and, rarely, tumors along the spine. Stress can also play a role, particularly in exacerbations of sciatica.

Can Sciatica Cause Knee Pain?

Yes. It can. We can see it in the symptoms of Sciatica:

When the sciatic nerve becomes compressed, it can cause pain to radiate from the lower back through the buttocks and down the leg to below the knee, sometimes even as far as the big toe. The pain can be dull, sharp, or burning, and usually intensifies when leaning forward, straining, or coughing. Sciatic knee pain can be felt in the front of the knee or down the back of the leg.

The sciatic nerve runs from the bottom of your spine, across the back of your buttocks, then down to the foot. Pain and even numbness can be felt all along where the nerve runs. Why don't you first try stretching that nerve. Lay flat on your back, bring both knees toward your abdomen, grab the knees with both hands, and pull them back to the stomach or chest area. You can either do both legs, or one at a time. don't let the legs back down quickly, go slow. To strengthen the lower back muscles, lay on your back, keeping your legs straight, left the up about 7 or 8 inches and hold, let them back down gently. Here you can also do both legs or one at a time. Doing them both is better. If you have someone to do this for you, have them place hot moist towels, along your back, the muscles nearest to the spine, and after several times doing this, have them massage your back with say Aspercreme. Massage the muscles along the spine, from the bottom to the top. Never massage right on the spine. You can also use ice packs to help with the pain, twenty minutes on, twenty off. Get yourself a low doze muscle relaxer to take for a few days. the stretching of the nerve is probably the best you can do. I have had what you have, and those exercises and massaging really helps. My knee felt numb. Vitamin B-12 Shots will also help.
