Advantages and Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Appendectomy

Advantages and Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Appendectomy

In almost all cases, appendicitis must be carefully examined to determine the severity and possible treatments. Your doctors will probably need to perform a series of examinations including blood test, urine test, and abdominal sonography. Laparoscopic appendectomy and open surgery have the same purpose, but you must consult doctors about the most appropriate procedure for optimum results.

Advantages of Laparoscopic Appendectomy

As mentioned earlier, some of the main advantages of keyhole operation are that the procedure can be completed quickly and it requires shorter hospital stay. It is indeed a short surgery which usually takes only 15 to 30 minutes. During the procedure, general anesthesia is used. Furthermore, patients can leave the hospital within 24 hours after the operation.

If you undergo the surgical operation in the morning, you are likely to be able to leave hospital at night thus reducing the overall cost of the recovery process. A full recovery of physiological functions may take 1 to 2 days only.

Another major benefit of laparoscopic appendectomy is that the procedure involves only small incisions as opposed to open surgery. Surgeons will only make very small incisions in order to insert laparoscope and other surgical instruments. Laparoscope is viewing equipment that is able to send images to a monitor. These images will guide surgeons throughout the procedures. Multiple incisions are necessary to reposition the laparoscope.

From the perspective of cosmetics, keyhole operation is better because it only leaves some hardly visible scars. The chances of post-operative pain and complications are minimal. With small incisions, the risk of hernia can be greatly reduced as well.

Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Appendectomy

Although this non-invasive procedure has a lot of advantages, some people may choose open surgery for many reasons. The major disadvantage of keyhole operation is its expensive cost. The instruments required to perform the procedure are high in price, so the cost for the surgical operation can be unaffordable. It requires short hospital stay that reduces rehabilitation cost, but you still spend a lot of money only for the surgery.

In some cases, surgeons discharge carbon dioxide into abdominal cavity. Therefore, the possibility of dysfunctions of body organs exists. Adequate surgery skills are required to perform the surgery. The entire procedures are done through the guidance of images displayed on a monitor. Every step in the procedure has to be precisely executed to avoid damaging other body organs. A doctor may need log-term training process before he/she is allowed to perform laparoscopic appendectomy.

Non-invasive appendectomy is not for everyone. If severe infection is diagnosed or the appendix has ruptured, open surgical operation is necessary in order to remove the appendix safely. A patient with pre-existing medical conditions including heart disease, obesity, and COPD is not a good candidate for keyhole operation.
