Causes, Signs, Symptoms, Treatment for Complications of Strep throat or sore throat


Strep throat or sore throat is an infection commonly caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus Pyogenes.



Causes of Strep throat or sore throat: 


Streptococcus pyogenes have special pilli (finger like projections which attach to surfaces) which favor attachment to the mucous membrane of pharynx. Hence it causes infection of the throat.

Strep throat is more common in school going children.
It is contagious and may spread from one person to another.

Signs and Symptoms of Strep throat or sore throat: 


Strep Throat is characterized by

  • Fever
  • Sore Throat
  • Swelled lymph nodes of the neck.
  • Swelling and pain in the tonsils.
  • pale color of the tonsils (pus) 
  • Pain or discomfort during swallowing.
  • Head ache
  • Pain in stomach
  • Nausea

Treatment and Cure for Strep throat or sore throat:


Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
Paracetamol is useful for reducing pain and fever.
Lozenges are very useful for minor sore throat
Sleep more
Use herbal teas
Proper antibiotic (under the prescription of registered physician)

Complications:

Untreated Strep Throat May lead to 
Sinusitis
Otitis Media
Meningitis
Glomerulonephritis
Rheumatic Fever
It must be treated with in 10 days of infection.

NOTE:

Viral Sore Throat is self limiting, it doesn't require any treatment and it is not affected by the use of antibiotics. Hence it is important to differentiate between viral and bacterial sore throat before taking expensive antibiotics.
